What's with the 2.5 inch elastic waist band?

I bought the men's pajama's pants, though I am a female, because I don't care for the cuffs on the bottoms of pajama pants. The fabric is lovely and soft. The patterns are adorable. It would be a five star item BUT the 2.5 inch thick waistband is intolerable. It's so thick and has the tensile strength of a body shaper or compression tights. Not appropriate for loose lounge/pajama pants. I gave a pair as a gift and the recipient agreed that the elastic waist bad is way to thick for a pajama/lounge pant.
