Parenting by the Stars: A Zodiac Parenting Guide with Tara Vogel

Parenting by the Stars: A Zodiac Parenting Guide with Tara Vogel Parenting by the Stars: A Zodiac Parenting Guide with Tara Vogel

Our first-ever zodiac collection has arrived — bringing cosmic charm and dreamy celestial illustrations to your lineup of LS! To celebrate the launch of Star Signs, we chatted with parenting astrologer Tara Vogel, dove into her story, and gathered her insightful advice for raising children based on their zodiac signs.

Tara's journey into astrology began as a deeply personal one. Her daughter's birth and unique needs led Tara down a transformative path — one that started with seeking answers and ultimately led her to embrace astrology as a parenting tool. Today, she helps parents understand their children on a soul level through natal charts and cosmic insights!

In this article, Tara shares tips for parenting your cosmic cutie based on their sun sign. Whether you're an astrology buff or just curious, her advice offers meaningful ways to support your child's strengths and quirks, nurture their unique gifts, and build an even stronger parent-child bond.

First Things First: What Is an Astrological Natal Chart?

An astrological natal chart is essentially a snapshot of the sky at the exact moment someone is born. This chart shows where the planets, sun, and moon were positioned at that time, and astrologers interpret these placements to understand key aspects of a person's personality, strengths, challenges, and emotional needs.

Think of it as a cosmic blueprint that outlines someone's unique "curriculum" for life. Rather than predicting the future, a natal chart offers insights into the path a person is meant to walk — their natural gifts, tendencies, and areas where they may grow. For parents, understanding their child's natal chart can be a helpful tool for connection, offering guidance on how to support their child in ways that align with who they truly are.

If you're curious about your child's full natal chart (beyond their sun sign), you can enter their birth information at astro.com to see their complete cosmic snapshot.

Astrology as a Parenting Tool: Don't Sleep on the Moon Sign

Before diving into sign-specific advice, Tara emphasizes that while a child's sun sign reveals their core personality, it's just one piece of the puzzle. A natal chart includes the positions of all the planets, and each placement adds another layer of insight. One of the most important placements for parents to understand? The moon sign. Tara explains that it governs emotional needs, early development, and how a child gives and receives care.

"The moon sign is really important — it's how your child is meant to be nurtured, how they perceive their caregiver, and how they'll care for others," she shares.

Tara also notes that the moon sign is especially significant during the first seven years of life, when a child's emotional foundation and nervous system are developing.

While the moon sign offers key insights, Tara has provided sun sign-specific tips below for easy day-to-day guidance. Let's dive into her insights for each zodiac sign!

An Aries child is here to meet challenges head-on. They live in the moment and are spontaneous, with a strong sense of adventure. Aries kids are often impulsive, so parents are kept on their toes! They're enthusiastic and give a big "YES" to life.

Sometimes they can seem self-focused because they have an objective in mind and will bravely go after it.

These children need outlets for their fiery energy, so outdoor activities are a must. They thrive with movement, exploration, and healthy competition. Be mindful of their need to be first — whether it's winning a race or leading a game.

Do:

•Encourage outdoor play and physical challenges.
•Let them take the lead in some activities — it helps them build their confidence.
•Praise their bravery and determination.

Don't:

•Overwhelm them with too many rules — they'll resist.
•Dismiss their big emotions; they feel things fast and intensely
•Expect them to sit still for long periods without breaks.

Taurus children are practical and prefer to move at their own pace — slow and steady wins the race for them! They love beauty, food, and anything that feels comforting and luxurious. These kids crave simple pleasures and value family traditions that make them feel safe and secure.

Taurus children can also be quite stubborn because they like things the way they like them. They need a lot of patience and reassurance, along with plenty of hugs and snuggles. With their strong sense of routine, they'll likely carry family traditions into adulthood.

Do:

•Create cozy, calming routines.
•Give them time to transition between activities. Rushing isn't their style.
•Offer tactile activities like baking, crafting, or gardening.

Don't:

•Force sudden changes to their schedule.
•Underestimate their stubborn streak — it's real!
•Forget to give them hugs and reassuring words. They thrive on affection!

Gemini kids are interested in everything! They love novelty, change, and anything mentally stimulating. These children are versatile, adaptable, and always curious. They thrive in social settings where they can talk, share, and absorb new information.

However, Geminis can become overstimulated by all their excitement and may resist naps or quiet time. Parents can help by scheduling regular downtime to help them recharge. Keep in mind that talking is a Gemini's favorite thing to do — conversations, storytelling, and playful Q&As will keep those curious minds engaged.

Do:

•Engage them with storytelling, fun facts, and educational games.
•Allow them to ask all their questions (even the endless ones).
•Schedule unstructured downtime for rest and reflection.

Don't:

•Expect them to stick with one activity for long if it's not exciting.
•Force them to follow a rigid schedule. They thrive on variety!
•Underestimate their love for talking — they process the world through words.

Cancer children feel deeply and are highly sensitive to the emotional undercurrents of their home. They're homebodies who love family traditions, comfort food, and cozy routines that make them feel safe. Cancer kids are sweet, yet incredibly strong-willed — think of a tiny mama bear in action!

Because they can be moody or cranky at times, attuned parents can help by creating an atmosphere of empathy and compassion. These kids need to feel understood and supported, even when their emotions feel overwhelming.

Do:

•Create comforting traditions, like family movie nights or baking together
•Give them space to process their feelings when they're moody.
•Offer physical comfort like cuddles and cozy blankets.

Don't:

•Criticize them harshly — they're highly sensitive to words.
•Rush them to "get over" their emotions.
•Forget to remind them that home is always their safe space.

Leo children have a radiant, childlike quality and love being admired for their unique talents. They're generous, warm, and creative — and they often have big opinions!

To support their need for attention and self-expression, provide plenty of outlets where they can shine. Whether it's through performances, art projects, or storytelling, Leos thrive when they feel seen and celebrated. To build confidence, reflect back to them what you see: "I love how your creativity shines when you paint!"

Do:

•Let them shine with creative outlets like performances or DIY projects.
•Compliment their efforts, not just their achievements.
•Celebrate their bold and unique personality.

Don't:

•Ignore their need for attention. They want to be seen and celebrated!
•Brush off their feelings when they're hurt — they're more sensitive than they seem.
•Try to make them blend in. They're born to stand out!

Virgo children are exacting, practical, and hardworking... especially when they're interested in the task at hand. They thrive when they have a project to focus on and a way to channel their thoughtful nature.

However, Virgos can be hard on themselves and may struggle with perfectionism. Although they're known for their need for organization, young Virgos may not be able to create structure themselves. Help by keeping their spaces simple and organized and by reassuring them that it's okay to make mistakes.

Do:

•Provide them with projects and puzzles that spark their curiosity.
•Keep their play space organized and simple to help them focus.
•Reassure them that mistakes are part of learning.

Don't:

•Overwhelm them with clutter. It can make them anxious.
•Expect them to relax easily — they tend to be perfectionists.
•Forget to acknowledge their helpfulness. They love feeling useful!

Libra children bring fairness, charm, and social graces to those around them. They're deeply attuned to harmony, both in relationships and in their physical surroundings. A Libra child's play space or bedroom may be especially important to them — they'll notice when things feel visually balanced or beautiful.

Libras don't always do well with too many choices, which can lead to decision fatigue. They also prefer one-on-one connections and may enjoy tackling tasks with a partner. Encouraging their creativity through activities like decorating, fashion, or collaborative art helps them feel empowered.

Do:

•Foster their creativity with collaborative activities like decorating or art.
•Keep their choices simple — they can feel overwhelmed by too many options.
•Help them resolve conflicts calmly. They thrive in harmonious environments.

Don't:

•Leave them out of social activities. They love one-on-one time.
•Ignore their desire for aesthetic balance. They care about their surroundings.
•Let sibling disputes linger — they'll be the first to seek peace.

Scorpio kids can be a bit of a mystery! They're intuitive, deeply emotional, and private. Scorpios often sense what others are feeling without it being said out loud.

These children need deep, trusting connections and can become stubborn if they feel pushed too hard. Instead of trying to "get them to open up," show that you're a safe, supportive presence. Scorpios love solving mysteries and uncovering hidden truths, so offer them puzzles, riddles, and deep conversations to help them thrive.

Do:

•Show them you're a safe and consistent presence. They crave trust.
•Give them space to work through their emotions before asking questions.
•Offer activities that let them dig deep, like puzzles and storytelling.

Don't:

•Try to push them into sharing before they're ready.
•Dismiss their intuition. They're incredibly perceptive.
•Break their trust — they take loyalty seriously!

Sagittarius kids are exuberant, optimistic, and always on the move. They're the adventurers of the zodiac, with a strong desire for freedom and fun. Their motto is "Shoot for the moon!" and they love to dream big and explore the unknown.

To nurture their curiosity while keeping them safe, set clear but flexible boundaries. These kids love learning about big concepts like philosophy, culture, and spirituality. Encourage their love for exploration through travel, storytelling, or outdoor adventures.

Do:

•Encourage adventures like nature hikes or museum visits.
•Foster their love for learning about different cultures and philosophies
•Give them space to be spontaneous and explore.

Don't:

•Keep them cooped up indoors too long. They need freedom to roam!
•Over-schedule their day. They like flexibility.
•Underestimate their curiosity — they'll ask about life's big questions early on.

Capricorn children tend to be serious, observant, and goal-oriented. They often seem older than their years and are natural hard workers.

However, they can be quite hard on themselves and may feel pressure to live up to high expectations — whether from themselves or others. Be mindful of setting goals that align with their interests and remind them to have fun along the way. Capricorns love understanding the rules and structure of things so they can figure out how to succeed.

Do:

•Help them set meaningful goals and celebrate their progress.
•Provide structure and routines — they like knowing what's expected.
•Remind them that rest and play are just as important as hard work.

Don't:

•Push them to take on too much. They already put a lot of pressure on themselves.
•Forget to explain the "why" behind rules — they love understanding the bigger picture.
•Ignore their need for alone time. They recharge by reflecting.

Aquarius kids march to the beat of their own drum. They're innovative, independent thinkers who are fascinated by futuristic ideas, humanitarian causes, and technology.

These kids may seem aloof at times but still crave connection and inclusion. Let them know their contributions matter and give them the space to pursue their unique interests. Group projects that allow them to experiment, like science kits or coding challenges, will fuel their creativity and individuality.

Do:

•Encourage their innovative ideas with STEM projects or creative challenges
•Give them the freedom to explore their unique interests.
•Help them feel included while honoring their need for independence.

Don't:

•Expect them to follow the crowd — they like to do things their way.
•Brush off their big ideas. They're natural visionaries.
•Forget to teach them the importance of emotional connection. They can seem distant but value relationships deeply.

Pisces children are dreamy, imaginative, and compassionate. They're highly sensitive and may need more sleep and downtime than other kids.

Pisces kids absorb the energy of their surroundings, so be mindful of exposing them to too much stimulation. Water is especially soothing for them — a bath at the end of the day can help them reset. Encourage resilience by validating their emotions and reminding them of their inner strength.

Do:

•Create calm, nurturing spaces for rest and creativity.
•Encourage soothing routines like bath time or reading before bed.
•Validate their emotions — they feel deeply and need reassurance.

Don't:

•Expose them to overwhelming noise or conflict. It can drain their energy.
•Underestimate their empathy. They absorb the emotions of those around them!
•Dismiss their dreams as "just imagination" — their creativity is their superpower.

I have always loved astrology. My son is a Taurus with an Aries moon and a Cancer rising. I think that describes him really well. I did enjoy the blog with its “do’s and don’ts” for each sign. Even if you don’t hold much stock in astrology, they are good tips for how to embrace and encourage your child’s personality and creativity 💛

I have a sweet Sagittarius! He’s only 2 months old but shows signs of wanting to explore and is intrigued with looking out windows. I can’t wait to explore the outdoors with him 💙

It’s so awesome to see how these are true to my kids! My sweet little Cancer baby needs extra cuddles and is the most content when someone is holding him. My Pisces toddler is so empathetic and thrives off routine, especially at bedtime!

My daughter is a Pisces and that description fits her very well. She definitely can get overstimulated. Because of that, we have to limit how many “activities” we do in a day. We try to limit how many people are around her along with keeping noises to a minimum to help keep her content. Also she absolutely loves the bath and it definitely allows her to express herself. We love her uniqueness and so happy to see her shine in her own ways!

This was cute! My girls are Gemini and Capricorn, and sometimes I wonder if they should have been switched, based on their personalities. I’ll have to delve more into the moon sign thing, maybe that’s where the differences lie 🤍❤️

This is so spot on for my little Aquarius! She loves helping me with laundry & handing me one piece of clothing at a time to help her feel included. It may make it take longer than it would by myself, but i love encouraging her independence at her own pace! These are excellent tips & it’s nice to know the “whys” on why she does things a certain way!

My son is a Loving Leo and boy does he love the attention. We always praise him for his efforts and achievements. He’s definitely one to feed off of it. There’s also times say he’s clowning because you can tell he’s looking for a reaction lol.

I was curious so I also looked at my own, although an adult(obviously) it was aligned with how I felt. Especially with work and how/what I need from leadership.

Very interesting article, would love for a 2nd edition with moon signs!

Sounds about right! My cancer daughter is highly sensitive. She likes to be in control of things. She always has big feelings, but that’s okay!! My other daughter is Capricorn. She only just turned 1. We love to see her personality come out. It’s amazing how different the signs are. My kids are like night and day. Both loved with all our hearts. Thanks for sharing this blog!

Her description for Cancer kiddos seemed spot on for my 3yo. My Sagittarius baby is only a year old so I’ll be curious to see if she develops the personality that was described above! Super insightful advice!

These are so accurate! I have a Libra boy who’s 9 and a Taurus girl who’s 9 months. While my girl is still pretty young to really see her personality, I know she is already very stubborn, likes to do things her way, and loves luxurious items – aka Little Sleepies! She will throw a fit if we put regular cotton clothes on her. Not even joking! Libra is so true for both me and my boy! Neither of us do well with choices and neither of us do well with conflicts. We both enjoy sitting in quiet environments like in our bedrooms and we decompress by being in calming spaces. So well written and so true! Thank you Tara!

My sweet little one and I are both Virgos. Our birthdays are just one day apart. I really wanted to have her on my birthday because I just thought it would be so fun. But now with us not sharing one I still feel that extra connection with her being the same sign. I loved reading about all the different signs and traits but I especially loved reading ours. I was just thinking about I can’t wait to watch her grow into her personality. While also thinking about my childhood and the perfectly made bed and clean room I had. Which fits perfectly with that the blog said.

I have a little Pisces. He is everything. I was more sensitive than my mother growing up but he’s far more sensitive than me. He reminds me to slow down, I know everyday he is actually healing my inner child. I do have to remind myself that he feels things on a bigger scale. I wish I could protect him from that, he has a big heart. Glad you guys came out with a zodiac print.

Super fun to take into account the Zodiac in parenting! Good tips for parenting any child, but I have a Leo boy that the description is spot on! He is spirited and adventurous, which requires certain guidance mixed with making space for strong expressiveness & social nature. My Libra girl is still very young, so I can’t wait to see if her personality develops like this says!

My daughter is a Sagittarius and you definitely hit the nail on the head. She is extremely exuberant and she is always on the go. We live in the country and she loves to go and on walks and explore the woods, looking at all the different animals running or hopping around, from squirrels to rabbits and even frogs. She loves to sit on the porch at night and listen to the owls hooting, while staring and pointing at the stars the moon, and the tall trees. She’s definitely a curious little girl that loves to ask questions, and that’s one thing I love the most about her. Her curiosity and her wild imagination.
