The Best Fabric for Eczema: Why Bamboo Viscose Works

The Best Fabric for Eczema: Why Bamboo Viscose Works

If you've watched your little one struggle with red, itchy, irritated skin, you know how heartbreaking it is. You've probably tried everything: different lotions, gentler soaps, switching detergents. And yet, the flare-ups keep coming.

Here's what finally made a difference for thousands of families (including ours): changing the fabric that touches their skin all day, every day. From morning playtime to bedtime snuggles, what your child wears matters more than you might think.

Turns out, dermatologists and parents agree that bamboo viscose is one of the best fabric choices for eczema and sensitive skin. Let's talk about why it works and how it can help your little one feel more comfortable around the clock.

Why Does Bamboo Viscose Help Minimize Skin Irritation?

Rough fabrics create friction. Friction causes irritation. Irritation leads to itching. And scratching? That makes everything worse.

Dr. Larisa Ravitskiy, a board-certified dermatologist at Sunrise Dermatology and Skin Cancer Surgery Center, explains it perfectly: "The initial skin issue is just the beginning. Scratching itchy skin thickens the skin, and thick skin is itchy."

It's a cycle that doesn't take a break and kids with eczema-prone skin need relief during active play too, not just when they're sleeping. Which means choosing the right fabric matters for every outfit, not just pajamas.

That's where bamboo viscose comes in. Dr. Ravitskiy recommends removing the trigger from the start by choosing soft, smooth fabrics. The buttery texture of bamboo viscose minimizes friction and helps calm irritated skin before the itch-scratch cycle even begins.

When you're figuring out what the best fabric is for kids with eczema, remember: soft isn't just nice to have, it's essential for keeping their skin comfortable and reducing flare-ups.

How Does Bamboo Viscose Keep Sensitive Skin Cool?

Heat is another major trigger for sensitive skin. Whether it's a hot classroom, playground time in the summer sun, or just sleeping under too-heavy blankets, overheating can cause flare-ups fast.

Pediatric dermatologist Dr. Anna Karp says it simply: "Avoiding hot water in the shower and staying cool while you sleep is very important for eczema-prone skin."

Both Dr. Karp and Dr. Ravitskiy recommend bamboo viscose because it helps regulate body temperature throughout the day and night. Dr. Ravitskiy notes, "For optimal skin health, wear body-skimming clothing made from breathable fabrics such as bamboo viscose, sleep in a cool environment, and maintain 45-55% humidity in the house."

These temperature-regulating properties aren't just beneficial at bedtime, they're great during daytime activities too. Breathable fabric helps prevent the overheating that can trigger uncomfortable flare-ups during school, playdates, or outdoor adventures. Plus, bamboo viscose dries quickly and doesn't stick to sweaty skin, making it perfect for active kids who are always on the move.

(And if you're a mama dealing with pregnancy or postpartum hot flashes? Dr. Ravitskiy also recommends bamboo viscose for that. Just saying.)

Are Bamboo Viscose Pajamas Eczema-Friendly?

Absolutely. Thousands of parents have made the switch to bamboo pajamas for eczema, and the results speak for themselves. Dr. Karp puts it simply: "Eczema-prone skin is already itchy, so fabric choice is extremely important for your little ones."

When our founder Maradith's son Gavin was a newborn, he struggled with terrible eczema. As a new mom trying everything, she discovered bamboo viscose and it was a turning point for his skin. That discovery became the foundation of Little Sleepies.

We started with the best pajamas for children with sensitive skin because that's where so many families need help first. But as we listened to parents and watched families grow with us, expanding to daywear became a natural next step. Because when you find clothing that doesn't irritate eczema and actually helps your child feel comfortable, you want those options available for more than just bedtime.

Are Little Sleepies Treated With Harsh Chemicals?

Never. When you're searching for clothing for eczema-prone skin, what's been added to the fabric matters just as much as the fabric itself. Chemicals and fire retardant treatments can trigger flare-ups in already sensitive skin.

Little Sleepies bamboo viscose pajamas are never treated with harsh chemicals or fire retardants. This commitment to keeping things pure and simple applies to everything we make — pajamas and daywear alike. We believe that clothing that doesn't irritate eczema starts with clean, safe fabrics that parents can trust touching their child's delicate skin every single day.

Is There Gentle Clothing for Sensitive Skin All Day Long?

Here's what every parent managing eczema knows: it's not a bedtime-only challenge. It's a 24/7 job that requires thoughtful choices from morning to night. You need eczema-friendly clothing for kids that works through breakfast messes, playground adventures, school days, and everything in between.

That's exactly why Little Sleepies created a daywear collection designed with the same careful attention to sensitive skin that goes into our bamboo viscose pajamas. Every piece features thoughtful details that support tender skin throughout active days: tagless or flat tag designs that won't rub or irritate, soft and gentle fabrics, and careful construction that eliminates rough seams.

Think of our daywear as the perfect complement to your nighttime routine. When you've found the best clothes for sensitive skin children at bedtime, you naturally want options that support that same level of comfort during waking hours.

Our daywear helps fill that gap, offering gentle, skin-friendly choices that make getting dressed one less thing to worry about when you're managing eczema. It's all part of supporting your family's needs around the clock, from that first outfit of the day through pajama time.

What Do Other Parents Say About Little Sleepies for Eczema?

Don't just take our word for it. Here's what families from our community have shared:

"My daughter not only has eczema but extremely sensitive skin in general. Almost every fabric, material, body wash, lotion, and even food breaks her out in some type of rash. It's an everyday thing at this point! Bamboo viscose is the ONLY material I have found that keeps her eczema in its calmest state and helps clear up all of her rashes that seem to randomly flare up throughout the day. I cannot believe it took me this long to see the correlation, but it's definitely convinced me to completely switch our PJs to strictly bamboo viscose!" ~ Lexi K.

"My son has severe eczema and I swear that the one night he wore Little Sleepies, I saw a dramatic improvement overnight!" ~ Jaclyn N.

"After having Little Sleepies recommended by several moms in a birth month group, I decided to buy a pair to see if they would help with Cameron's eczema. One pair turned into many pairs, and they are now all that he wears to bed. Eczema on his back and chest that wasn't responding to other suggestions has improved drastically when we made the switch and continues to stay clear. He is staying cool, clear, and comfy, and I am going to keep using Little Sleepies for as long as I can!" ~ Lauren W.

"We tried everything to help my daughter's poor little skin and decided to give Little Sleepies a try. We started with two pairs and now have 14—they are all that she wears and it's been over a month since she has had a breakout. I'm so thankful that we found Little Sleepies and so incredibly grateful for how much it has helped our sweet Hanalei's skin." ~ Kyndra G.

For my baby’s sensitive skin we try to use mostly bamboo (no scratchy fabrics!), use clean ingredients, limit dyes and fragrances.

My little guy has developed eczema over the last month or so, and I can definitely notice a difference when I dress him in his bamboo versus cotton! He seems so much comfier in his Little Sleepies than in anything else, so I’m a firm believer that material matters!

My son Luca has suffered with eczema since he was 6 months old . Everything would irritate it the soaps , lotions , and especially being to cold or even warm . I invested in little sleepies when he was about 8 months because Bamboo is thermoregulating. We saw less than a week later his skin improved significantly. He also slept way better ! At 18 months old he has his own little collection and it has become sort of a routine for us at this point . Bath , unscented lotion and our bamboo pjs !

“Loved this article! My baby has very sensitive skin, and I’ve seen firsthand how much of a difference the right clothing makes. Soft, breathable fabrics like bamboo viscose really do help keep irritation and flare-ups away. I appreciate how this post explains why bamboo is so gentle — especially the part about temperature regulation and avoiding harsh chemicals. Thank you for sharing such helpful information and for creating clothing that truly considers babies with eczema and sensitive skin!”

Before I had my son I had super sensitive skin and different fabrics would hurt my own. When I discovered your pajamas, it was a game changer and it slowly became my own personal pajamas that I wore to bed. Now that I have my beautiful son he wears your sleepers to bed and out and about. We love the prints and we love how nice it is for our skin!!

We love Little sleepies for sensitive skin! We have 4 cloud blankets that have absolutely saved our boys skin. He was 2 weeks old when he broke out in what we thought were hives but upon further investigation we discovered that he had severe eczema which was triggered by many fabrics. We switched over to little sleepies because we had seen success stories from many others. Like magic within 4 weeks the irritation was completely gone which meant we were sleeping better. We had a couple twin size sheets converted to bassinet sheets to prevent irritation and it was a whole new world for his skin. Now he’s a year and lives in little sleepies and so will our next babe. Thank you for being our saving grace during the transition to new parents🫶❤️

My daughter has eczema, and I did as a kid too. I remember how itchy I was in my pjs and how rough they always felt. I love that I have the choice to help my daughter’s skin and comfort with her clothes!

What an incredible post! Dr. Karp made some excellent points when it comes to avoiding irritated skin for our little ones. She shared that viscose bamboo material dries quickly and doesn’t stick to wet skin. That’s a must in my family! My little girl is very hot natured and sweats a LOT! If I put any outfit on her other than Little Sleepies, her skin becomes red and irritated all over. Little Sleepies products are absolutely imperative when it comes to avoiding irritated skin. We live for this brand!!

I tried the fleece pajamas on my daughter when she was a baby and the material was so hot and the zipper seam irritated her skin. Since that one time, all my kids wear to bed is bamboo pajamas!

My baby girl has eczema and only gets flare ups when she’s in anything other than bamboo, so that’s what works for us! Along with making sure we’re using sensitive skin safe detergents.
I’m always researching the best creams and lotions for daily management.
I love the lightweight of the material and it helps not stick to her skin and irritate it.

My son was recently diagnosed with eczema at 3 months old and his pediatrician recommended little sleepies to me and the first few zippies i got swear helped his skin breathe better. he had such a bad rash up his back and down his shoulders going into his arms and with his eczema lotion and the material in the zippy not absorbing the lotion it helped clear up the areas less than a week. this sold my husband immediately.

I love the representation in the photos! I have three children. My oldest struggled with severe eczema (need prescription creams) until we discovered Little Sleepies! It immensely helped his skin, so much so that when he wore cotton day wear it would flare up so we made the swap to the play line for daywear and his skin is perfect!
My middle daughter has trisomy 21 so her skin is extremely sensitive not only to fabric but temperature changes too! The bamboo helps regulate her skin temperature and has really helped her eczema. We still have to put cream on her face but her arms/ legs/ back have benefited from bamboo. My youngest hasn’t had any skin issues but she has a lot of hand me downs! Another great reason to buy bamboo. It lasts!!

I loved this! As someone who has extremely sensitive skin and SO many things dry my skin out, all of this is good to know not only for my son, but me too! One thing I’ve learned with both of us is using nothing scented, but still good for us. Also, researching laundry detergent has helped immensely! Using the right ingredients in anything and everything has made a huge difference.
