Signs Your Baby Is Ready to Transition to Two-Piece PJ Sets

Signs Your Baby Is Ready to Transition to Two-Piece PJ Sets

Wondering when to stop using Zippies for bedtime? You’re not alone! One of the most common questions caregivers face is how and when to make the baby pajama transition — especially when it comes to swapping cozy Zippies for Two-Piece Pajama Sets. If you're currently navigating the toddler pajama transition or simply curious about what to expect, we’ve got answers (and adorable options) for every stage.

In this guide, we’ll walk you through the baby sleepwear milestones, share helpful tips, and explain how Little Sleepies makes the transition from Zippies to Two-Piece Pajama Sets feel like a dream.

What’s the Difference Between Zippies and Two-Piece Pajama Sets?

Before we dive into when to switch, let’s talk about one-piece vs two-piece pajamas.

Zippies are our one-piece pajamas that include thoughtful features like fold-over mittens and convertible foot cuffs (unlike regular footie pajamas), a double zipper for quick and easy changing, and a snug fit for safe sleep.

Two-Piece Pajama Sets include a separate top and bottom, making them perfect for independent toddlers, potty training, and littles who love to dress themselves. They also include a snug fit for safe sleep.

Both are designed with comfort and safety in mind. The difference lies in how your child moves, grows, and feels in each style.

When Do Babies Stop Wearing Footie Pajamas?

There’s no set age for when you should stop using Zippies for sleep, but many families make the switch sometime between 12 and 24 months. That being said, every baby is different and their cues will tell you more than the calendar can.

Look for these signs it might be time to size up or switch:

  • The fold-over foot cuffs can no longer convert to footie pajamas

  • Your little one is walking confidently or showing increased mobility

  • They’re starting to potty train or showing interest in the potty

  • They’re climbing in and out of the crib

  • They’re tugging at or resisting one-piece pajamas

  • Their current sleepwear feels too snug, even after a recent size-up

LS Tip: Our pajama size guide can help you determine if it’s time to size up or explore new pajama styles.

Why Some Caregivers Stick with Zippies

If your baby is still happily snoozing in a Zippy, that’s okay, too! Many families continue using one-piece sleepwear well into toddlerhood, especially during colder months or overnight diaper changes.

Reasons to stay with Zippies:

  • You’re doing frequent diaper changes

  • Your baby still fits comfortably in their current size

  • You prefer full-body coverage for cooler nights

  • You’re looking for simplicity during travel or routines

How to Ease Into Two-Piece Pajamas

The best way to tackle this toddler pajama transition is to make it fun and familiar! Here are some easy tips for a smoother switch:

  • Try two-piece PJs during naptime first before committing at bedtime (here are some tips & tricks for managing nap schedules!)

  • Let your toddler help pick the print! they’re more likely to love what they helped choose

  • Stick to your usual bedtime routine for consistency

  • Choose stretchy, ultra-soft sets that feel as cozy as their Zippy

Can You Use Both Pajama Styles?

Absolutely. In fact, many families find it helpful to keep both styles on hand, depending on the season, routine, or even the day's mood.

Here’s how some of our LS fam mixes it up:

  • Zippies for cooler nights or travel

  • Two-Piece Sets for potty training or warmer weather

  • Matching prints for siblings at different stages

Baby Pajama Transition FAQ

What’s the best age for two-piece pajamas?

Most toddlers are ready between 12–24 months, but follow your child’s developmental cues. If they’re pulling at zippers, climbing into bed, or showing potty interest, they might be ready.

Can I go back to Zippies after trying two-piece sets?

Of course! Every day is different. Some toddlers prefer one style over the other depending on how they feel, what they’re doing, or the season.

Do I need to size up when switching to two-piece sets?

Check our size chart for guidance. Our fabric is designed to stretch and grow with your little one, but sizing needs may vary as they become more mobile.

My grandson is on a feeding tube at night and needs the zip pj’s.
Would you ever consider to make these pj’s in larger sizes such as 10 & 12?

We switched to 2 pieces for potty training purposes! Even though zippies still fit and we didn’t night train at first, it was easier to teach independence with pulling her own pants down with 2 pieces. Plus it was an excuse to buy more Little Sleepies! 😂

I’m not readyyyyy 😭 my twins may be but I’m so not 😭 the zippies are my favorite but it does make more sense to switch to 2 piece pajamas for potty training (happening soon) thank you little sleepies for thinking of these things! 💜

My husband and I decided to make the switch from zippies to two pieces at 12 months. Did we have to wrestle our son into them like a WWE match? Yes. Did he end up loving them? Absolutely. His favorite print are any with dinosaurs, and all of them are named “Arlo.”

My little one is about to be 12 months and we have been doing a mix of zippies and two pieces. The zippy is definitely easier for diaper changes and ease of getting my little one dressed. But I’ve been liking the two pieces as well, and they will definitely be useful once we start potty training eventually. But for now I think we’ll be doing a mix of both zippies and two pieces!

We LOVE our zippies. My two year old will be wearing them until she absolutely can’t fit. They are so convenient and all season appropriate.

I love this advice. This might be my last baby though so she will most likely stay in zippies until forever…

Eek I don’t know that I’m ready yet! My daughter is 2 years old now but she still loves her zippies and I have a couple sibling matching prints that I need her baby brother to grow into! But maybe I’ll introduce a 2 piece on the weekends so we can work on potty training a bit.

We have been buying size ups for our 7 month old but we were just talking to friends about when each of us would start introducing 2 piece sets when ironically I came across this article!! We cannot wait to start building our stock pile of 2 pieces and have a fun rotation of prints!

I love the zippies and I wish I could purchase them all! With my daughter, the two pieces just make her look so much like a toddler already….It’s sad actually so don’t make that move if you’re not ready lol. We transitioned around 6-9 months for no real reason other than cute pjs we had and I couldn’t find zippies that fit her well( we didn’t discover little sleepies till a few weeks ago) but we do go back and forth and she doesn’t seem to mind at all!

Sweet Samuel is 13 months. We go back and forth with zippys and 2 pieces. He looks like such a big boy in the 2 piece… but watching him learn to walk or waddle across the room in a zippy is the cutest thing ever! When he starts potty training, I know 2 pieces will be best! We love us some Little sleepies ❤️

We loved the zippies for when my daughter was younger! She is now 21 months and is a girl on the move! We love the two piece jammies for comfort and movement. We love little sleepies!

My toddler just turned 2 and we are currently alternating between both. It is hard for me to even think about totally phasing out the zippies. 🥲

I love the zippies. I’ve bought some 2 piece for my granddaughter. I will probably buy more when she starts potty training soon.

I personally wish two piece sets started at 6-12mo size. I love them! It’s a fight to get my one year old in a zippie so two pieces are way easier!! I think the two pieces are also very long lasting as my 4 year old still fits in 2T!

We absolutely loved both for so many reasons! I personally just found one she really started to walk/run to make the switch from zippies to the 2 piece sets

Great to know the cues I should see from my little one when he will be ready to switch from his zippies( we love) to a two piece set🥰

This was a really helpful post! My kiddo just turned two and we’ve been easing into two-piece sets. I still prefer the zippies with the convertible feet when pairing with sleep bag walkers but as my little one grows and becomes more independent, two pieces will be wonderful!

We have a 2 piece and zippy wearer in our house. We love them both and how breathable and soft they are! The double zipper is a must on the zippys.

I have 2 little sleepies kids and both are tall/big kiddos. My son is 20 months and the 3T shorties and 2 pieces both fit like a glove… so I’ve started buying 2 pieces in 4T for fall/winter for him. For reference I’m 5 ft 9 and my hubby is 6 ft 5. Both kids wear a size double to their age lol. So even though he’s not even 2 yet we’re switching to 2 pieces for sizing 😅.
