How to Swaddle a Baby: A Simple, Safe Guide for New Parents

When your baby is born, everything is brand new! Life as a newborn can be a big transition for your little one, and swaddling is one of the best ways to help them feel safe and secure. Not only does it keep them cozy, but it can also prevent the startle reflex that wakes up so many newborns mid-nap.

And let's be real — there's nothing cuter than your baby all wrapped up like a little burrito, right?

If you're a first-time parent, figuring out how to swaddle a baby might feel intimidating at first... but you've got this! Here's a step-by-step guide to help you confidently swaddle your newborn while keeping them comfy and safe.

Step 1: Start with a Snuggly Soft Swaddle

First things first, you'll need a swaddle blanket that's gentle on your baby's delicate skin. Our buttery soft Lunaluxe™ Bamboo swaddles are perfect because they're breathable, stretchy, and ideal for any season. They keep your baby cool in the summer (no sweaty, fussy naps!) and warm and cozy in the winter — so you don't have to worry about temperature control. Plus, they're a breeze to wash, which you'll appreciate after that first (and second, and third...) inevitable diaper blowout.

Step 2: Fold the Swaddle

Lay your swaddle blanket flat on a bed, couch, or changing table. Fold it diagonally into a triangle. The top should be the fold, with the wide end pointing down. This creates a cozy little pocket for your baby to snuggle into.

Step 3: Position Your Baby on the Swaddle

Place your baby on their back in the middle of the triangle, with their head above the top fold. Make sure their body is aligned straight and their arms are at their sides. Always use a flat, safe surface, like the floor or a bed, to keep your little one secure while you wrap them.

Step 4: Start Wrapping—One Side at a Time

Start by taking the bottom corner of the swaddle and folding it up over your baby's chest, tucking it snugly under their chin. Then, pull the left side of the swaddle over their left arm and body, making sure it's snug but not too tight. Tuck it under their right side and back.

Next, straighten their right arm (don't worry if they wiggle a bit!) and bring the right side of the swaddle across their body, tucking it securely under their left side. You want them to feel snug, but they should still be able to move their hips a bit.

Step 5: Tuck in Any Extra Fabric

Once your baby is wrapped, you'll likely have some extra fabric hanging loose. Go ahead and tuck that extra fabric into the folds you've created. This helps keep the swaddle snug, so it doesn't come loose while your baby sleeps (and hopefully sleeps long enough for you to grab a snack or binge-watch an episode or two of your favorite show).

*For children's safety, hats and headbands should never be worn while sleeping

Step 6: Practice Makes Perfect

Swaddling can take a little practice, especially if your baby is a bit squirmy. The more you do it, the more natural it'll feel — like riding a bike, but way cuter! Don't be discouraged if your first few swaddles aren't picture-perfect; your baby will appreciate the cozy feeling regardless.

When to Stop Swaddling a Baby

Once your baby starts rolling over or showing signs of mobility, it's time to stop swaddling. Babies need freedom of movement to keep themselves safe when they start exploring. No need to retire your swaddle sets to your "donate" or "for the next baby" boxes yet! You can still get tons of use out of your swaddle — it's perfect as a stroller cover, nursing cover, tummy time mat, or even a backdrop for those adorable milestone photos.

Swaddling can be a game changer for both you and your baby, offering comfort and security in those early months of adjustment. While it may feel tricky at first, with a little practice, swaddling will become second nature.

Before you know it, those sleepless nights will turn into peaceful stretches of rest, and you'll have mastered one of the most comforting tools in early parenthood. And if not...

"Honestly, I still have and use so many of our swaddle blankets and with a 6 and 3 year old! I never mastered a burrito baby, but there are extra uses of a swaddle that are so valuable throughout parenthood, especially with pretend play. Blankets for stuffies, tablecloth for playing picnic and restaurants, and to always have in the car or at a restaurant!"

Even though we are past the swaddling stage, we still love to use our swaddles for stroller blankets on crisp mornings. Plus our toddlers have grown to use them for imaginative play as well! A win all around, if you ask me.
