The general guidance is to stop swaddling once your baby shows signs of rolling, which typically happens somewhere between 2 and 4 months. At that point, being swaddled can become a safety concern since a swaddled baby who rolls to their stomach has limited ability to push back up. If your baby isn't rolling yet but is starting to break free from the swaddle consistently, that can also be a natural cue to transition. There are a few signs to watch for: sweating, flushed or red skin, rapid breathing, or damp hair. If your baby feels hot to the touch on their chest or back of the neck, that's a good indicator they need a lighter layer.
