The general guidance is to stop swaddling once your baby shows signs of rolling, which typically happens somewhere between 2 and 4 months. At that point, being swaddled can become a safety concern since a swaddled baby who rolls to their stomach has limited ability to push back up. If your baby isn't rolling yet but is starting to break free from the swaddle consistently, that can also be a natural cue to transition. Moving to a sleep sack is a popular next step since it keeps that cozy, contained feeling without the safety considerations of a swaddle.

For newborns, swaddling can be really beneficial. It mimics the snug feeling of the womb, which helps many babies feel calm and sleep more soundly in those early weeks. Swaddling can also help reduce the startle reflex that wakes babies up during sleep. The key is doing it safely: the swaddle should be snug around the arms but loose enough around the hips and legs to allow for natural movement. Always place a swaddled baby on their back to sleep, and stop swaddling as soon as your baby starts showing signs of rolling. Click here for tips on how to swaddle your baby.

There are a few signs to watch for: sweating, flushed or red skin, rapid breathing, or damp hair. If your baby feels hot to the touch on their chest or back of the neck, that's a good indicator they need a lighter layer. Our swaddle blankets are made with breathable bamboo blends, which help regulate body temperature naturally, but room temperature and additional layers still matter. A comfortable sleep environment is typically between 68 and 72 degrees Fahrenheit. When in doubt, dress your baby in one light layer underneath the swaddle and adjust from there.
